World Boxing runs Olympic boxing. The IBA, USA Boxing, and England Boxing run amateur boxing in their own events and countries. The WBC, WBA, WBO, and IBF sanction professional world titles. The British Boxing Board of Control licenses professional boxing in the UK.
How long is the rest between rounds?
One minute. Every rule book in the table sets the same rest, from 8-year-olds to world title fights. USA Boxing's rule book puts it plainly: the interval between rounds is one minute.
How many rounds are in a boxing match?
- Amateur: 3 rounds, at every age.
- Professional men's world title: 12 rounds. The WBA also allows 10.
- Professional women's world title: 10 under the WBC, 9 to 11 under the WBA, 10 or 12 under the WBO.
- Other professional fights: fewer rounds, up to 12. In the UK, a fight must have at least 8 minutes of boxing, under the British board's rule 3.7.
How long does a whole fight last?
Add the rounds and the rests between them. A fight that goes the distance lasts:
| Fight | Boxing | Rest | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amateur, 3 × 3 min | 9 min | 2 min | 11 min |
| Women's title, 10 × 2 min | 20 min | 9 min | 29 min |
| Men's title, 12 × 3 min | 36 min | 11 min | 47 min |
Why are women's pro rounds 2 minutes?
The WBC says its rule of 10 rounds of 2 minutes for women's title fights rests on a clinical study, and kept it in 2025. The WBA and WBO write 2-minute rounds into their rules for women's titles too. Not everyone agrees: the British board's championship rule is 12 rounds of 3 minutes for everyone, with 10 of 2 minutes for women only when both boxers agree and the board approves. Florida's commission allows either length.
Amateur boxing settled the question the other way. World Boxing, the IBA, USA Boxing, and England Boxing all give elite women the same 3 rounds of 3 minutes as men.
Why is a boxing round 3 minutes?
The 3-minute round with a 1-minute rest comes from the Queensberry Rules. Before them, under the London Prize Ring Rules, a round ended when a boxer went down, so rounds had no fixed length. No source we found explains why the Queensberry Rules picked 3 minutes.
Olympic boxing rounds
World Boxing's current elite rules set 3 rounds of 3 minutes with 1 minute of rest, for men and women. The event rules for the 2028 Games in Los Angeles have not been published yet. The qualification system says they are due in March 2027.
What round length to train with
Rule-book rounds are for competition. To learn, start shorter, so your form holds to the bell. The rules themselves scale rounds by age and experience: kids box 1 minute, juniors 2, elite boxers 3.
- New to boxing: 3 rounds of 1:30 with 45 seconds of rest. That is week 1 of the 4-week boxing plan, which builds to 4 rounds of 2:30.
- After a few weeks: rounds of 2:00 to 2:30 with 45 seconds of rest, as in weeks 2 to 4 of the plan.
- When you hold your guard to the bell: 3-minute rounds with 1 minute of rest, like the pros.
The boxing round timer can run any of these, and rings a bell for each round and each rest.
